Prompt: “She told me her name was Sylvie and she was twelve, and then she showed me her collection of decapitated china dolls.”

(first person narrative - babysitter)

Staring at me with a twinkle in her eyes and an eager smile, I stumbled backwards. Their jagged, hollow necks were impossible to ignore.

I tried to stay as calm as I could. “What did you do with their heads, sweetie?”

Sylvie was fiddling with the light pink frills of one of the dolls, trying to arrange them in a prim and proper way.

“I buried them in the backyard.”

“And how did you break them off?”

“I used a knife. Here it is,” she said, letting go of the doll and sashaying to her bed.

(first person narrative - Sylvie)

I was so excited for the new babysitter. She seemed sweet, and I couldn’t wait for us to be friends. When my parents left the house, I just knew I had to show her my doll collection! Hopefully she wouldn’t react the same way as the old one. That one didn’t understand me, and it was unnecessary for her to openly call me insane. Who does that to a kid? Anyways, after we introduced ourselves, she followed me upstairs with a smile on her face. She seemed just as I excited as I was. Her eyes went wide open when we entered my bedroom, and she couldn’t take her eyes off of my gorgeous dolls! She even had to take a step back to admire their beauty.
