Prompt: "Lyra and her daemon moved through the darkening hall, taking care to keep to one side, out of sight of the kitchen." - The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman (1995)

Lyra and her daemon moved through the darkening hall, taking care to keep to one side, out of sight of the kitchen. Her mother was washing the dishes at the sink, humming softly while doing so. The portal would be closing soon, and they had to act quickly or else the daemon would be stuck in this dimension, dying slowly with each passing day.

They crept along the wall leading to the front door, and slowly opened it so as to not alert Lyra's mother of her escape with this peculiar, two-winged creature. As soon as they were out on the porch, they could see the beaming pink light shining in the empty school field just a few yards away from where they stood. However, its glow was starting to dim. Lyra ran as fast as she could in its direction, her daemon flying alongside her.

When they finally made it, Lyra found herself with tears in her eyes.

"I wish you didn't have to leave," she said quietly.

The daemon looked at her with a sad gaze, and chirped sorrowfully in response. Lyra embraced it for one last time, before releasing her arms and watching as it flew its way into the portal, back where it had come from. Despite her sadness, she knew that she would always remember the magical nights they had spent together, and that she would never forget the great friend she had found in this kind, mystical creature.
